| GS Garcia spans 140 years and chronicles the history of two historic saddle companies, G.S. Garcia Saddlery and J.M.Capriola Company, from their early growth years through their final union,
when the owners of Capriola’s purchased the business owned by the son of G.S. Garcia. This pictorial history follows the life journey of Guadalupe Santiago “G.S.” Garcia, sons Les and Henry,
and Joseph Martin Capriola–all legendary saddle makers who made their living creating gear for working cowboys and ranchers. With 300 rarely seen photographs of family, unique leather and silver items, and pictures of G.S. Garcia’s first catalogue,
the book brings the reader to the present through the lives of the Jayo, Bear, and Wright families who have chosen to continue the western tradition through the custom leather saddles, exquisite silver work, and quality western equipment of J.M. Capriola Company.
This book was inspired by Henry Garcia, G.S. Garcia’s son, who visited Elko, Nevada, before his death in 1993. Henry described to Paula Wright, owner of J.M. Capriola Company, the Elko of nearly 100 years earlier and the business for which his father became famous. This sparked Paula’s interest in capturing the story of the Garcia family business as well as those of the Capriola, Jayo, Bear, and Wright families, and encouraged her, and Dee Dee Garcia White to see that this book became a reality. With details from Angie Garcia, Henry Garcia’s wife, and her daughter, Dee Dee Garcia White, granddaughter of G.S. Garcia, the narrative includes details of the Garcia business in Elko, Salinas, and Reno. Interviews and personal histories complete the information about the J.M. Capriola family and the subsequent owners of his business, the Jayo, Bear, and Wright families, who continue the saddle making tradition in Elko. Garcia bits and spurs are available today through the J.M. Capriola Company, begun by Joseph Martin Capriola, a former apprentice in the Garcia shop and a rancher in his own right. Under the ownership of the Bears and Wrights, his 75-year-old business is joined with the bit and spur making business owned by Les Garcia, G.S. Garcia’s son. The Legacy of Silver and Saddles marks the 100th anniversary of the Garcia Beauty, G.S. Garcia’s Gold Medal saddle, and the 75th anniversary of the J.M. Capriola Company. |
